Newspaper contribution 3: Overcoming obstacles

José Feliciano

Jose Monserrate Feliciano García (was born September 10, 1945 in Lares, Puerto Rico) is a singer of boleros and ballads, and a leading interpreter of the Spanish guitar

Background and Challenge:

His name is synonymous with an international presence that has influenced popular music for more than two generations. Has joined and played musical styles in a unique way. Jose Feliciano is the first Latin artist to enter the American English music market, opening doors to other artists who now represent an important part in the American music industry.

One of eleven children, Jose was born sightless, but this did not create any obstacle that gets into what would become his passion: music.

His history with music began at the age of three years, touching the bottom of a tin of cookies, while accompanying his uncle who played “el cuatro”. At age five, his family emigrated to New York City. He learned to play “la concertina” at age six using a disk group as a teacher. In the eight years he appeared before his fellow students at 57 public schools and the nine years he appeared on stage, Puerto Rican Theater in the Bronx in New York. His interest in music led him to learn to play guitar and using the same way his records as a teacher and stronger determination, practicing sometimes up to fourteen hours a day. Exposed to the music of the fifties was inspired to sing.

At 17, Jose left school because his father was unemployed and he wanted to bring aid to his family. Jose played in Greenwich Village cafes to receive as salary what was customary in those days - passing the hat. In the same year, he had his first professional engagement in Detroit, Michigan. Shortly thereafter, a renowned music critic wrote of his participation in Gerde's Folk City, referring to Jose as "a magician of ten fingers which plays, run, wheel, tap and reverberates his six strings in an incomparable manner ..." And he added: "If you want to witness the birth of a star come on at Mr. Feliciano before he leaves tomorrow night."

Outcome:

Versatility would be the word that would describe Jose Feliciano. Besides playing the guitar beautifully with its unique style, plays 17 instruments: bass, banjo, organ, twelve-string guitar, mandolin, harmonica, piano, harpsidordio, accordion and among others, some South American instruments such as conga, the “el güiro dolro “o, timbales, timbalines, the Brazilian quique, kazoo, etc. Also sings in six languages. By unifying their youthful voice, rhythm-blues Jazz-Soul of his guitar and Latin-inspired, have an undeniable phenomenon, seller of millions of records and winning great awards.

Four decades support the work of the Puerto Rican singer Jose Feliciano has developed around the world, who gave new impetus to Latin music in 1996 to give effect to the bolero was beginning to wane. And most importantly, considered one of the greatest songwriters of recent times, with his disability against, has achieved a place as a music legend of our continent.

As a curiosity in various interviews John Lennon came to declare that the versions that Feliciano made to Beatles songs like "Help", "In My Life" and "A Day In The Life" were his favorites, a fact which is not very funny known is that on the album Rock N 'Roll by John Lennon is Jose Feliciano precisely speaking on three songs playing guitar.

Life lesson:

Clearly he is an exceptional person who has shown that sometimes the obstacles are there just to make our greatest legend. For example the music we like, sometimes we do not dare to sing or learn to play a musical instrument by the famous "shame", but Mr. Feliciano is an example of how you can overcome the human being and even more reach world-renowned success.

Letter about Neuroscience

Dear Mrs. Silvia:

I am very grateful to you for offering us the opportunity to participate in your conference and also I appreciate the time spent reading this letter.

For me was very interesting to know and remember different topics about the human brain in their variety of complex issues that involve both the functioning of the body as well as the development of various skills of dexterity. I don’t know all the different technologies to study this important organ, for example: computerized axial tomography, MRI, electroencephalogram, autopsy and medics provide healthcare to local population.

Another example very amazing was the case of Phineas Gage, who because of an accident, as you explains in the conference, he suffered severe damage in the brain, specifically in the frontal lobe. He had noticeable changes in personality and temperament, which was considered as evidence that the frontal lobes are responsible for processes related to emotions, personality, and executive functions in general.

It is also very important to know that the brain has neural connections, these are developed throughout life and therefore how our "human being." And the importance of taking into account the environments in which we perform, for example: social and interactions, psychological environmental conditions, excessive stress, self-regulation of emotions, involvement opportunities, representations, ways of expression and action, reflection and enriched environments.

On the other hand, I considered that the Auditorium with the yellow lights are too very tired to the students like me who come to work. Besides the heat of the room is unbearable, the enclosure should have air conditioning and no bright lights suitable for sleepy students or participants.

Finally, thank you very much for sharing your experience and knowledge with us.

Best regards!

Newspaper contribution 1: Media

Media in Costa Rica

The main element that the people use today to communicate and entertain around the world is the Media. Through this important actual element the people can inform, look for the last news, make new knowledge, socialize with people of different places and make new friends.

In Costa Rica, we have or enjoy Freedom of Expression with certain moral and ethical standards set by the citizenship and religious precepts; in other countries the Estate prohibits access to certain information o express free ideas. But this “Freedom” in our country has been sometimes shaken by the murder of journalists for example Parmenio Medina; a voice that only seeks to inform the people about atrocities committed by bad economic and social groups. On the other hand you can look social groups who freely express their ideas about government proposals and different topics that can affect the population.

The citizens in Costa Rica can access different elements of media to inform, to inform and to entertain but we have to be careful because you can see data or documents that are not appropriate to children and sensible people.

We have the television and the cable entertainment; you can look for the last news on 7 Channel “Telenoticias”, CNN, CBS, BBC or Fox News. Also we can learn through the Discovery´s Channels, A&E, Biography and History Channel about science, history, Universe, animals, political topics, celebrities, human constructions, etc. We can also enjoy different movies on the channel HBO, Cinecanal, TNT, Studio Universal, Multipremier, and Disney with all kinds of topics for the human temperaments.

Other media is the newspaper, either on paper or online, you can have access to the last days news in Costa Rica, in the world, sports, entertainment, adds, editorials, health, nutrition, recipes and more topics for the popular interest.

And finally one of my favorite media is the Internet, because I can see and learn positive or good information and entertain me in several ways, for example: read news, look for information about our favorite artist or singer, create a blog, learn about different subjects, know and share with people around the world, to listen music and watch videos about all things.
